Sandy Hook Memorial Competition

Venturing into the world of design competitions is not something we typically do here at the Studio but this one spoke to us on a deep level. Five years after the unimaginable events that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a committee from the Town pulled together a brief for a design competition for a permanent memorial park.

We envisioned the park as a place of reflection and discovery inspired by one of the simplest joys of childhood: chasing fireflies. The presence of fireflies in nature is an indicator of a healthy ecosystem so we adapted this concept to represent the regeneration and growth of a healing community.  While we did not win the competition we took great pride in the work we produced and the inspiration of the process and community.
