The newly constructed development includes a five story office building and above-grade parking garage. The design challenge was to create a pedestrian scale central courtyard as the focal point within a vehicular dominated space between tall structures. The courtyard-over-structure consists of a series of raised planters, seat walls and a stepped amphitheater. These elements provide a human-scale for the courtyard space. The pedestrian entry sequence transitions from the vehicular drop-off area through the amphitheater to the outdoor café terrace at the north end of the courtyard. A hierarchy of native plantings provides layering and seasonal interest while the perimeter landscape connects the site to the naturalized context. Progressive stormwater management techniques are applied throughout the project. The design meets the aesthetic and functional goals of the client while keeping within budget and maintenance guidelines.
