Chelsea Soldiers’ Home Community Living Center
Location: Chelsea, Massachusetts
Architect: Payette with DCAMM + Veteran’s Affairs
Status: Construction
Working with DCAMM and the Veteran’s Association the project incompasses the design of the 8 acre site of the existing Quigley Memorial Hospital, Malone Park and all landscape within the western side of the Chelsea Soldiers’ Home campus. The new Community Living Center (CLC) will focus on wellness and healing through an environment within a park with views to nature from every room. The landscape entry sequence balances military formality with sinuous paths, garden plantings and spaces to rest. Secure exterior spaces include the Sunrise Courtyard and Meditation Garden which support the interior programming of the Community Center for more formal ceremony while providing quiet garden meander paths for tranquility and privacy. The Meditation Garden sits on the roof over the Physical + Occupational Therapy space to the west and provides circular pathways around raised garden landforms for dementia patients and mental health therapy. Malone Park is redesigned for the community and will support the Physical Therapy programming of the Hospital.
The existing Quigley Hospital is currently being used as migrant housing. The landscape construction is on hold while the State works to find more inclusive housing options. Anticipated landscape construction to re-start in 2025.
