Boston Convention Center – Cypher Street Greenspace

Location: Boston, Massachusetts
Architect: Kleinfelder
Status: Construction Administration

The Massachusetts Convention Center Authority has initiated a beautification plan of their grounds including:
a new 42,000 SF greenspace, 1500 LF of planter screening and 1200 SF of new median plantings. Situated in
the quickly developing Seaport District on a post-industrial site, the design of the greenspace was driven by a
tight timeline and an untouchable hard cap inches below. Due to these unique demands, Studio 2112 sought
to strategically build up the site to provide planting depth, creating berms that buffer the site from high traffic
adjacencies and form protected “rooms” for the public to convene in.

Envisioned as an extension of the Convention Center, the design brings in a series of outdoor meeting rooms
centered around species-specific pollinator gardens. These spaces facilitate the gathering of people and
urban fauna alike, creating unique colorful pockets of biodiversity that bring much needed softness to the
surrounding concrete flatland. Universal access and age-friendly furnishings have been provided throughout
the site. The project will be completed Summer of 2025.
